The only advice I have ever been given is to eat something that isn't messy or will make your breath smell.
Also, if there is any food that makes you burp, try and avoid it too.
Whatever you do though, he / she is going to discover how you eat sooner or later. Therefore my school of thought is to eat what you like and be yourself.
However, if you're really nervous about it, just for a drink and leave the public eating till the next date.

Definately!! I have a really bad thing about it.
I avoided eating infront of my boyfriend for ages, we would go out and Id give it the old : no im not hungry (starving though!) then id get home and order a takeaway!
After a few weeks, on a drunken night out I demolished a Big Mac in front of him in about 3 seconds! Such a relief!!!

Hey gang, I am studying to be a chef in the US. My thinking is , if you cant just be yourself and have fun even at dinner then sone one, and you know who you are, is just putting on a front. Dont do that. I love to cook and eat also. Tasting new things are a great way to know what each other likes. I would much rather share a meal and have a date or friend pick off of a sampler platter and have a pint or two. Try to get over that fear and just have a great meal, great time even if they dont. Its about the food and good times. That is just the way I see it.
