Please can someone briefly describe the difference and which would be best course of action to avert unwanted, persistant attention from an ex? And finally, how much will it cost roughly?

Hi,
You won't necesarily need any of these. If you report the unwanted attention to the police they can issue a warning to your ex that if he contacts you again he will be charged with harrassment.

paul, can't contact the police about it (there is a very good reason for this!), so any ideas on the costs?
