Newark Airport

I am travelling to Chicago via Newark & have a short connection time.
Can anyone tell me if the luggage comes off at Newark or goes though to Chicago? also do you go though immigration first, before collecting luggage.
Thanks

However, unless things have changed since I last went, you will have to go through immigration at Newark, collect your bags and go through Customs. You will then be able to hand them in again and they will be transferred to the Chicago flight for you. This will all take some time. How long do you have between flights?
Steve D is correct - you go through immigration at Newark, collect your bags (which will have Chicago tags on them), take them through customs and check them in again. This is usually just a question of slinging them on a conveyor belt - you don't have to queue up agai.
On the way home they will be transferred for you.

Heathfield and the others are correct that the luggage is collected by you after immigration but before customs. You then give it over to be loaded on your next plane. They will tell you where. Bear in mind that you will have to go through security checks, searches, bag xray, etc. after you have handed your luggage over again.
