I hate Norton with a passion and believe it can slow your computer up.
I much prefer a selection of FREE utilities that come with excellent recommendations. At the moment I use:
Comodo Firewall
Avast Anti virus
AVG anti-spyware (not the AVG antivirus)
These programs have automatic updates.
I also run on a regular basis:
A2
AdAware
Spybot
All free.
But other people will have very different ideas and some will prefer Norton. I suggest you download either A2, AdAware, or Spybot (or all of them!) and see if they find anything.
A2 Free 3.0 (The second in this list)

AdAware

Spybot

I'd add avira to ethel's list (nothing wrong with any of hers)
it all depens on what your surfing habits are.
free progs tend to allow scanning ... but omit real-time protection
bought ... has the lot (if you have money - look at kaspersky)
there is another train of thought that says ... build a machine .... image it .... do nothing else .... rebuild the machine to a timetable ... or when you experience problems.
this is fine so long as you don't use the machine as part of a network, for banking, send e-mail attachments ... or have an irreplaceable collection of files.
one of my test machines sits on the redsife of one of the firewalsl and has been used on the internet for at least an hour every workday for 5 months now ... still not caught a single virus (quite a lot of how risk trackers [including the BBC one!]) - but nothing of concern
the drive image I use could be used daily (takes only 15 minutes to complete a full re-build)
and without any type of checker running ... all the processor has to do is run my programmes......

back to simplicity ;-)
Norton has got a bad press lately because while it was always regarded as good protection ... it slowed the PC down so much that it became unusable.
norton 360 got quite good reviews ... but kaspersky got better.
there is no such thing as 100% - kaspersky got 98 which is impressive
AVG always get's good reviews ... but that's because it's free.
lately avira is doing well also free but better detection than AVG.
presonallu - if you are going to pay -- go kaspersky
for a freebie ... avira.
the third option is don't do anything - this is irresponsible on a network ... but on a stand alone machine used ony for surfing and web based e-mail - you could get away with it
and enjoy the full power of your machine
