I was 3 months prem cos mum was really ill and they had to take me out. apparently i had no eyebrows, fingernails, toenails and i looked like a little rabbit! my nan used to knit me hats and test them on a jaffa orange (cos thats how big my head was) I spent the first months of my life in an incubator. They didnt let me leave the hospital until i was 5 pounds. I dont think ive suffered any adverse effects apart from asthma (as my lungs werent developed enough, but thats controlled and id say i wasnt very academic in school, but now im a support worker and drugs counsellor so i havent done too bad to turn it around!) Or maybe im just lucky, she had a boy on her first pregnancy who was a week more prem than me and he didnt make it (died at 3 weeks old).
My daughters friends baby was born at 22/23 weeks, I think she weighed just over a pound. Although she was in hospital for the first year of her life she is now about 3 years old and has just started nursery. She still has health problems but just looking at her she is like any other kid her age.

50 percent of babies weighing 1lb 2oz to 3lbs don't survive. Mainly they have problems with respiritory problems.
Methadone has no reported cases of birth defects and research has demonstrated that the effects of inutero exposure to Methadone are relatively benign. A pregnant women cant just withdraw as it would most likely cause a spontaneous abortion. If she was still using heroin then that would explain the poor fetal growth but I would imagine there would be evidence to suggest this and she would either be in a mother and baby unit or unable to take her baby home (well thats what happens here anyway).
1lb at full term sounds unheard of to me.
