Accommodation in New York?

Im going to NY in December but i don't want to spend a fortune on hotels as the plan is to sight see.
Looking for suggestions on cheap central accommodation, hotels/villas, but please not in the slums either.

I posted this somewhere else but we stayed in the wolcott hotel ( http://www.wolcott.com ) and it was cheap and clean and central but nothing special.

Other cheapies which you could google are:
Manhattan Broadway Budget Hotel
Americana Hostel
New York Inn

Try searching on www.expedia.com for the best deals in the Midtown area

The Chelsea hotel used to be one of the cheapest on 23rd & 7th. For sight seeing try the Pennsylvania Hotel just across the road from Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan, just around the corner from Macy's, Broadway and about 8 blocks from Times Square
