I have successfully propagated cuttings from margarita daisies, phygelius, penstemons and ivies, just by placing the a young shoot in a jar of water in the greenhouse over winter. After rooting they were successfully potted on and transferred to the garden.

Are there any more common garden plants that I could apply this method to? Sadly, it doesnt work for my mint crisp honeysuckle.

It works for fuschias & impatiens as well!!
Am not sure about garden plants but you can regenerate new basil plants this way by snipping off cuttings from this herb and keeping in water on your kitchen window sill. Little white roots will start appearing within a week and I regularly regenerate my basil plants in this way..
