How big was the letter worn by Hester Prynne in the Scarlet Letter?

I don't think that the size of the letter 'A' was ever mentioned was it?

This is mentioned in the Introduction to the novel

It was the capital letter A. By an accurate measurement, each limb proved to be precisely three inches and a quarter in length.

I read the book not too long ago and I remember reading that Hester tried to cover the letter with her hand once. So I figured it was the size of her palm.
