Dispute with insurers re home contents policy

Insured through bank for home contents insurance, which states that valuables are included, however, have lost a ring given as gift by late husband around 20 years ago, which at the time cost around �800 and insurers are refusing to pay out as their is no receipt available. Any advice on how to take this forward?

Have you any photos of the ring? Has it ever been listed as a valuable item in any household insurance you have had since you were given it? In today's terms that �800 is over �1600 and would have to be listed as a single item of value in most insurance policies.

Are you sure it's covered. Most policies cover valuables only in the home not those lost outside the home. You need a special policy to cover losses outside the home. If you've lost it in the home it must still be there somewhere so insurer won't pay.
