Can any one nudge me in the right direction please?

I have a good half of the basic answers but cannot see what to do to be able to complete the grid.

Any help, hint, explanation - anything would be most gratefully received.

Look for what all your answers have in common, then relate that to a cryptic interpretation of a synonym for EMPLOY...

Thank you - even with this help it took some thinking through. I quickly saw the commonality and after aome puzzling was a cryptic interpretation but it was my husband who twigged how to use that to complete the grid. So many thanks to you and my hubby too!
