warning against anaesthetic....vets
17 Answers
Last week i took my i11 month old German Shepherd tp the vets for general anaesthetic for castration. I really had no concerns, the vet told me that it is the easeist, quickest most common operation that any animal can have. I booked him in for last wednesday at 8.30. The vet told me that Kane is a young healthy dog with a good strong heartbeat.....no worries
I arrived home at about 9.30 and expected a call around lunch time, the vets called me at 10.30 to tell me that Kane had passed away whilst under the anaesthetic...
I have since found out that that it is the most dangerous thing any animal can under go....if only i had known!!!! Apparently, the statistics are 1 in a thousand 'and they call this RARE.
Kane was one in a million ! I really loved him so much. A huge part of me died last Wednesday and both myself and my husband are heartbroke as well as the rest of my family, he was the most loving, gentle, loyal pal and i am missing him so much, i dont ever think we will get over this...So.... really. all i want to say is that if you are thinking of any surgery for your animal please be aware of the the risks....WE WERE NOT!!!!! x x x

So very sorry, but it is a fact that there is a risk with any anaesthetic, albeit a very small one. Your Kane was just unlucky that something was not right with him. I would hate to think other people would not have their dogs or cats operated on if they needed it just because of the possible risk. Unfortunately we have to rely on our vets, and in the long run many more dogs ands cats would lose their lives if we did not have them, and if dogs and cats were not neutered think of the many thousands that would end up being put down because they could not be homed or were not wanted.
I know this will not help you but think of the good times and I hope you can consider giving a home to another dog as you obviously have so much love to give to an animal.

hi lox, im so sorry to hear about kane, and at such a young age too. im disgusted to know that the vets failed to mention to you what risks are involved as you should always tell the client that. i have worked as a veterinary nurse for 5 years and have always been told that you should always make sure clients are aware before letting their pets go under any operation. regardless of how big or small tha animal is,there is always a risk when putting any animal under anaesthetia.
Thank you all for your kind messages. Really sorry kipchip about your horrendous loss with your GSD especially been pregnant at the same time, it must have been really traumatic!! At least i have the comfort that Kane was asleep when this happened but the pain is still hard to bare and my heart goes out to you, I also will never get over loosing him, it;s like living through a real life nightmare.
The vet did give us a disclaimer to sign, but even when you;re sighning it you dont really think that anything is going to go wrong really, do you ? well i did;n't, it never crossed my mind for a split second that i would never see him again,
Oh well, here;s a little good news. We are travelling to Manchester in the morning to collect a 6 week old GSD dog which we went to see 2 weeks ago, I;ve been through every emotion possible during the last 10 days but i am looking forward to getting him now, infact, I;m really excited and dont think i;m gonna get much sleep tonight. This new puppy will never replace Kane but he will fill the huge spce in our home and our hearts.
Hi Lankeela, thank you also for your reply, ido understand exactly what you say and agree with you but, i wont ever have my dog put under anaesthitic again unless it really does mean ;life or death; i'm sure you'll understand
Thank you all again and ill keep you posted on our new addition x x x
