screeching noise
4 Answers
Hi, I live in Tenterden in Kent, and I frequently hear a "Screeching" noise from a bird of some sort. I hear this noise at different times of the day, mostly early morning, but sometimes in the afternoon and evening too. I was wondering if anyone knew what this could be. I thought it may be an owl of some type, but would that be screeching during the day?
I know it isnt foxes, as i know that noise really well (was plagued by them where I used to live)
This noise is just one screech at a time, sometimes a few minutes apart.

Magpie or Jay are quite likely. One of the moorhens calls can be likened to a screech. Little owls are about in the daytime. They screech. Of the bigger owls only the barn owl is likely to be about in daytimes- if it is it will be hunting and likely to be silent.
However- try the RSPB site- particularly the bird ID pages at http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name /a/index.asp
choose a bird and the top of the page lets you play the call of that bird. Happy hunting!!
