Refund rights

I bought a pair of football boots for my son today -97 from Sports World International. He couldnt come with me as he is ill. When I showed them to him they were not the ones he wanted, so I took them straight back. The ones he wants are not available in that store. I asked for a refund and they refused saying it was not their policy. They would only do an exchange or credit note. I said I need the money to buy the right ones and I could not see a sign anywhere which said what their policy was. They pointed out that it was on the cash desk, face up, where the items which you are purchasing are placed (therefore obscuring it). I tried to demand my money back but they flatly refused.
Anyone know what are my chances of fighting this ?
Thankyou

They do not have to offer a credit note or exchange - that is simply a goodwill gesture.
You could try ringing Head Office to plead your case - you may be lucky. But they are right in law.

never ever go out and buy clothes or shoes for your son/daughter without them being there lol. I have learnt this to my cost!
anyway nearly one hundred pounds for a pair of boots?!!?
isnt there something else he needs instead that he could get with a credit note if they wont give you your money back - they dont need to give it back sadly.
