I only have quite a small size ghd and wrapped my hair round the plates (keeping pinkies well away from the plates) so it was coiled round. Left it for a bit and then pulled the plate away to release the hair (quickly) and you get a curl. My friend is mega at curling hair with them...she did mine once and I couldn't believe it, was excellent.
when my hairdresser curls my hair with the GHD's she gets an inch wide piece of my hair, runs the straightener down it, then, while the hair is still hot she twists it with her fingers to create a loose, but long lasting curl that looks a bit more natural than the very structured ringlet-type curls you get from using the GHD like a curling tong. I have quite long hair, though. not sure if that makes a difference.
I find curling my hair with GHD'S quick and easy- faster than tongs etc and just as good, I 'd say. I take about an inch of hair, clamp the straighteners on it, twist the straighteners180 degrees (sort of so the ends of your hair go upwards) and pull it down the length of the hair. Needs practice, but can give great bouncy curls when done properly. Also, GHD'S are good because you can easily control how tight you want the curls- for looser waves, don't twist the straighteners so much. Hope this helps!
