what the hell is a discovery?

Why do solicitors always send letters so that you receive them fri nite when you come home from work or sat morning when their offices are closed.
I am separated from my husband but living in the marital home which he pays for. Have just come home from work and find that his solicitor wants me to complete a discovery of earnings? What the heck is that? Why do i need to do it? Can i refuse, and if i do, where does it leave me?
