I am a postgrad student. My bank started giving me grief about my free overdraft and said pop into a branch and give us proof that you're still a student and have regular money coming in. I can't get the proof I need for various complex reasons for several months.
Anyway I went in yesterday to deposit some cash (not at my branch) at about 4 pm and the teller starts getting nice and friendly with me and asking if that's me 'finished up for the day'. I kind of think she might be probing so fob her off with some bs non answer, and she probes the same issue again, drawing the conversation right back on to me being finished up for the day. I made a comment about the bad weather lol.
I'm pretty convinced she was trying to figure if I'm employed or a student.
Would they really be directed to do this?????

I doubt it. Cashiers can't usually see notes etc that have been put on your account. I worked in a Bank until a couple of years ago and we never had to do stuff like that.
Fairly sure that she was just trying to make conversation. Maybe she thought you were a mystery shopper or perhaps you are just over aware as you were uncomfortable about going into the bank expecting to be challenged. I can see their point though - if the facility is only open to students, I can't see that it is any issue that they want you to evidence that you are still a student - I also can't see why that is a problem - surely you have a matric card or can ask the college/uni for a letter.

sounds like u work for my bank. My god, they're everywhere :)
hi meredith - I work in financial services compliance - I did work for a very large UK bank, also in compliance for a while - so you may be close ;0) - we're watching you!!!! lol

Thing is, banks are staffed by real people, if you are not a student at the moment, but will be soon, you need to be honest with them and I am sure that they will be understanding with you. Like most people, they only feel annoyed when they think someone is trying to pull the wool over their eyes. Not that I am suggesting that you are anything of the sort!
Hi Meredith101, have you considered that she may just have fansied the pants off you?...tee hee.

I work in a college and we provide letters to students to take to banks and open student bank accounts.

Haven't you got a facility like that or even a lecturer who might help you with a letter to proove you're still studying
that was meant to be fancied
