VW Golf dashboard warning lights.

My son's '04 Golf is showing two dashboard warning lights. One says ' EPC' the other is in the shape of an engine block. Any idea what they mean, please ? The car's handbook has been lost.
Also, the brake lights only operate intermittently.The bulbs are OK but is this fault any connection with the 'EPC' warning or is it something separate ?

The brake light switch is more than likely faulty.
