Going Online for Multiplayer on the PS3 help!!!!

I want to go online for the ps3 but it wont let me,I choose wired connection adn do all the stuff it says to do and then i test the connection and it says:

IP ADDRESS : (FAILED)

and the it comes up with an error code,
PLEASE can u help me.

how are you connecting - direct thru router or via ics?
it may be a firewall issue perhaps?

Directly through the Router mate.
