Is it me - I find it a bit rude when you buy something and they just leave it on the counter and make no attempt to pass it to you ... my friend says I am being old fashioned but surely it is not that big a deal to make a small gesture of passing you the carrier bag ??

I would agree with you. It annoys me so much when people can't even be polite, people walking taking up the whole path is one of my big issues at the moment, when two people are walking one way and you are walking on your own the other, most people would prefer you to walk in the road than move to single file!

I hate it when you get to a crossing at traffic lights and the cars pull over the pedestrian crossing part and then the light turns red so they are stuck, there blocking my way,

i always pass really close with my bag as if im gonna stratch it!!!! Grrrrr

I know that wasnt about shopping, but its still about good manners!!
yes i agree, putting your change on the counter instead of in your hand is bad manners in my opinion, you're not being old fashioned it's common courtesy to have good manners, today i held the door open for 3 elderly people & not one of them said thankyou!!! i said "your welcome"!!!!

Well, I'm temporarily living in Germany, and I have to admit they are the rudest people I have ever come in to contact with.

One thing they do in shops is put the change on the counter, even when you hold out your hand infront of them. They even have little dishes on the counter to put the change in so they don't have to hand it to you. It's so annoying!

Also when people bump in to you on the street they don't even turn around to acknowledge that they've done it. That really annoys me, so (ashamedly) I normally turn around and make a rude comment at them, (in English of course, I don't want to get killed...).

Grrr

@leandrews: Just for your information, most people in Germany do speak English, so they probably understand very well what you are bitching about.

While I do agree with you on the unfriendliness of many Germans (not all of them, being one myself), I don't see, how being rude back is going to help in any way.

That annoys me too. I have so many gripes with how many counter staff treat customers. Like talking to someone else while serviing you, not saying hello or thank you, not even looking at you, not actually checking your signature when you use your card. The list goes on so I'll stop before I bore you to death.
Well here is an opinion from the shop assistants side. My son works in a shop and I know he is very particular to pass the item to the customer and place their change in their hand not on top of the receipt so it slips off on to the floor! But he really gets mad when customers treat him like something they just trod in! It is a shoe shop and he has had to fit shoes on people with a serious BO problem, that is just awful. It makes the day go well if customers are pleasant and pass the odd friendly comment plus pleases and thanyous would not go amiss.

Tell me about it, I have worked in a bar in a golf club for quite some time, and I had a customer flick a hot used tea bag (straight out of his mug!) at me because I dared to suggest that he could put the used bag in the bin next to the bar, saving me an unnecessary trip to the kitchen.

What I was asking was not unreasonable, and when I was telling my workmates later, the "Flicker" overheard me and told me off for reporting it to others. He's the most miserable b*s*a*d I've ever encountered, and it's no wonder staff can occasionally be moody if we can get treated like this.

Workers should not be treated like something disgusting that the customer has just found on the bottom of their shoe.

I agree totally, miss leandrews. Being your boyfriend, I will gladly talk to the motherflicker! Heh heh.
I have a condo in new york's trump tower and the staff are all lovely and so polite however recently I came across one in the city and he was so rude! I guess they're only polite when they wan't tips. New Yorkers are so rude!
