Returning to an old employer - HELP!
5 Answers
I left my old job after 4.5 years as I wanted a change, I have been working in another company for a year and a half and really miss my old job. When I left they said the door was always open if I wanted to return, and I know they are still recruiting for my old position. What is the best way to approach my old firm, I have no idea what to write to ask if they would consider having me back. Any ideas? Help, has anyone ever been in this position?

If you still know people there then maybe give them a call and see if they'd be interested. Just dont assume that everything will be exactly the same as when you were there before. It might work out but it might not.

I was in this position - and I contacted my former boss to ask if they would be willing to supply a reference as I was looking for another job - he then offered me my old job back, might be a way of doing it without 'losing face' if they don't want you back as you weren't actually asking for it!

Twenty20 - She said she had been at here old place for 4.5 years but only left 1.5 years ago. However I would agree going back can often be a bad idea, very much depends on why you left in the first place.
To be honest I'd just contact your old boss, either formally or a quick phone call, you could go down a similar route to Jibergt suggests and say you are looking for a new job and are just checking references, if they are keen they will respond, if they don't I would imagine a more formal application might also be ignored.

Just walk back in and see them. I always welcome back ex-employees that have not left under a cloud. The reason for this is that they usually come back with tales of how bad other places were there by informing the rest of the employees that "the grass is not always greener on the other side". Also you will need very little induction time and training because you already know the job...go for it.
