DNA Sample at birth

why cant a DNA sample be taken of everyone at birth, so when a crime is committed and DNA is left at the scence or on a body, the true identit of the criminal can be known immeditaley.

It makes total sense, as apposed to obtaining the DNA and waiting to match it with the criminals. If all our DNA is stored on a database, people would think twuice about committing a crime.

thats true.......well call me liberal, but i for one would go down to volanteer my dna if it mean it helped the police narrow down there suspects just one person.....

im sure im not alone.....

...and even if the data could be protected, the governement make the rules, they can change the rules and do what they like. Local authorities already sell off electoral registration data, it's not a huge step to sell off DNA data to interested parties. I take a lot of convincing this can ever be viable. Leave the system as is, let the police steadily collect their DNA + Fingerprints and use them as they do now, as indicators not as certainties.

i dont think there is any right or worng answer in this case, i think its purely down to the indiividual.....

i suppose its probly a flaw of mine that im so care free,.....but i can only REALISTICALLy see teh benefits....

'nothing to hide nothing to fear'. I don't agree that it's correct, plenty to be feared from a government with that info, but even if I did trust the government, who are they to demand my DNA????? They're just a tool of the people for the people, not my master/keeper/parents. It's MY DNA, not theirs, they need a bloody good reason to take that info from me.

well i think everyones posts have been fantastic. All have different reasons to agreeing and apposing.

I have to say that yes databases and the DNA can be messed about with and innocent people could be framed, but there would have to a policy around when this could be used. I agree with the scenario of crying wolf or crying rape when the female actually gave consent, this would be to the detriment of the male. So I dont think it could be used in a scenario like hat

But in circumstances where a person is murdered, DNA is found in the wounds or on a wepon, then a DNA scan of the database to reveal the killer would be an excellent idea.
