Its me again. Thank you for all your help, the other day, especially you...vehelpfulguy...
I tried what you said, by pressing Ctrl, Alt & Delete & the Task Manager window appeared. I was not sure if this was something that would run & then end. I left it running, but got fed up with waiting so cancelled it.
Also, I wasn't sure exactly what you meant by saying the System Idle Process is top with about 99%??
This is how it read:
System Idle Process....System....65 (CPU column)...16K(mem usage column)...Process: 87 & CPU Usage: 0%.
Also along the task bar at bottom of page, it read Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low.
PLEASE, WHAT DO I DO NOW? Sorry for waffling but hope you can help (again).

The task manager shows you the status of your computer.

It shows you what programs (processes) are running and how much of the CPU the are using.

I was concerned that one program may be running using up all your CPU time and slowing it down.

Look at this picture of the task manager as an example.

Note the program at the top (foldtrajilte.exe). See it is using 95% of the CPU time.

The program underneath is using 3% and the next one 2%.

So if there was a problem with this PC I would want to know why one program is using 95% of the CPU time.

Now you need to look at your Task Manager and see what (in anything) is using up your CPU time.

If the CPU is doing very little then it displays a line saying "System Idle Process" and it is usually 95% or whatever (showing the CPU is 95% idle).

What you need to do is see what programs (if any) are running on your computer using CPU time. If a program has a zero against it then it is using NO CPU time.

This is very important and probably why your computer is running so slowly.

Let me explain why.

A computer has REAL memory (when it says 512Mb or 1Gb in the description on a computer).

When a PC is switched off this REAL memory is empty (your programs like Windows, and your data, are held on hard disk).

When you switch your computer on it loads Windows and other programs from hard disk into REAL memory.

But sometimes your REAL memory gets full up and there is no more room for any programs. So what can Windows do ?

What it does it creates an area of your hard disk that is called VIRTUAL memory.

So to free up space from your REAL memory it copies things from there to VIRTUAL memory.

When it needs them again it copies things from VIRTUAL memory back into REAL memory (and other things out of REAL memory into VIRTUAL memory).

Obviously if it needs to keep copying files from REAL to VIRTUAL and then BACK again it is going to slow the PC down.

Of course if your HARD DISK gets filled up with YOUR files (photos, movies, other personal files) then there is no room for this VIRTUAL memory, and Windows has nowhere to put the files.

This could be why your PC is running so slow.

You can get round this a number of ways.

Check how much free space you have on your hard disk.

If it is full clear some space on your hard drive. Back up some files and delete them (or delete others if you dont want them).

The BEST way is to get some more REAL memory in your PC. Then Windows will not need to use VIRTUAL memory at all and it will speed your PC up a lot.
