Try using SpyBot S&D or AdAware to clear out unwanted Spy & Adware. Programs don't download with permission of some kind, but it may be unclear what comes with a package.

Rubbish, `drive-by' downloads are now quite common where no permission is given.

Spybot and ad-aware are excellent programs, but be sure you have the genuine articles. There are programs out there that imitate them, but actually install spyware.
