House spiders live anywhere and everywhere. The travel round the house, usually unseen, and rest in dark corners and crannies. I personally hate the things, but I either ignore them, or catch them and put them out - or more often, get my wife to do it! I do sympethise, but they are a fact of modern living, and they do keep down the flies, which carry diseases. You will never be able to get rid of them completely, so get a spider dtrap from your local hardware store - it's a catch and release system, and pop them outside.
Not sure how fast they breed but this is a great website with gadgets to get rid of them www.buyabugbuster.com

Having spiders in your home is better than having mosquitoes and flies, spiders are our friends! They are probably coming in to the house because it's starting to get cold outside. I catch them by letting them walk on to bristles of a broom and then put them in the garden. My husband lets me do that job.
Leave them alone. I allow spiders in my house, for all the reasons mentioned. I live next to a park, 1 mile from ancient woodland and used to be plagued by flying insects. Now that I leave the spiders alone, I don't have so much trouble. I even let their webs stay up for a while. I must add, I once kept a tarantula as a pet, but my girfriends dog ate it!! (she's not my girlfriend anymore!)
