joint account and writing checks

if you have a joint account and your wife leaves you but still she continues to write checks,does the bank have to pay them?

In the UK yes, however the law may be different where you live, I take it you're American, right?
Over here, you need to inform the bank ASAP that you are seperated from your partner and ask them to ammend the account and stop all cheques that she writes

That's not true

You cannot remove some one from a joint account unless they give permission and if the account is overdrawn they cannot be removed until the debt is paid. The bank will have a duty to honour her cheques until she is removed form the account

Meanwhile, while you have these problems, you might want to set up a separate account in your own name only for your salary to be paid into it, so that at least she can't clear that out.. But until her name is removed from the account I'm pretty sure that even in the US you are both liable for any debts incurred.
