I dont know what category to put this on but as most questions on here are answered quicker I wondered if you could help me my gran died last week aged 00 and her funeral is on monday next week but my employers have refused to let me have a day off can they do this

If you have a poor attendance record or habitually ring in sick then it is unlikely they will accommodate you, what comes around goes around, if you have a history of commitment to your job you should have no problem, make sure you arrange cover and do not just take the day without authorisation or you will lose a days pay and possibly receive a letter of concern.
do you know, i must be the softest boss on the planet, i engineer lieu time for one of my staff just so she can have half term off every time with her kids, and i always get the students to work over christmas to give the mums time off with their kids and get the mums to work new year so the students can get bladdered, thing is, they are all quite happy : ))

I think the boss should be lenient about this. Perhaps if you offer proof of you attendance? Like a service bulletin or
Death certificate? They sound horrible.
Dot- you do sound like a nice boos and you say they are happy. Why can't other employers get that if the worker bees are happy they will produce more honey?

I had a similar issue when I worked for a certain supermarket chain (begins & ends with "A"); a good friend had died but when I asked for time off for the funeral I was told that unless it was immediate family (not even grandparents), the answer was no.
So I went on sick leave, and nobody said anything.
