I am hoping to go to New York for a weekend in December - but will only have 2 and a half days there to visit. Can anyone recommend a good budget hotel, and an itinerary where we could see the most important sites, plus any unusual ones too. Thanks for your help.

Have a look at this New York Times Travel Guide. On the left hand side you'll see New York in 1 day, 2 days, 3 days.
You have to start with the 1 days itinerary and then go on to 2 days to get the 2nd day. (if you go straight to 2 days it refers you back to the 1 day tour for the first day).

For hotel recommendations go to Tripadvisor website and when you get to the New York page you can either look at hotels in order of members votes or can choose an area. There will be reviews of the hotels & you can choose a price range.

I would recommend the Milford Plaza, one block from Times Square, and really hot on security, you really have to show your room card to get to the lift area. http://www.milfordplaza.com/

I have also stayed at the Hotel Pennsylvania which is one block from Macys, but the rooms aren't as nice and there is no security.
