How would you rate ryanair?

What is the deal with discount airlines such as ryanair and easyjet? Are they worth the time trying to book flights or do the hidden costs raise the prices so high that it is easier to take a regular airline?

If you book very early then it's very worthwhile but just a few days before you travel normally puts the price up to within a few pounds of "normal" airlines.

You can fly 'real' airlines for about the same price. Personally, I refuse to fly Ryanair ever again. I flew them once about 10 years ago. I was appalled by the crew's approach to safety and hygiene. I also have strong concerns regarding the negative impact Ryanair has on communities who pay large subsidies to get Ryanair to fly to their community, but once the subsidy ends, Ryanair withdraws service. Obviously, these are only personal thoughts, but for me, it's sufficient to make an informed decision to travel on someone else.

I find Ryanair load their prices far more than Easyjet. Easyjet's prices usually work out to be pretty much as advertised, whereas Ryanair start of at a price that looks good, but by the time they've added all the extras on, it turns out not to be such a bargain. We've often flown just as cheaply and far more comfortably with BA.

Additionally, I absolutely hate the constant advertising of Ryanair products and services throughout the flight. Give us some peace Ryanair!!

I have used Ryanair several times, and provided you are careful, they are excellent! The accommodation is basic, with adequate legroom, but no free drinks or other frills. The staff are efficient, and every flight I have taken has arrived on time or early, even if take-off has been delayed.
But you MUST be careful when booking. I have a friend, always called Barry, so I put 'Barry' on the booking form. As his name is actually John (I didn't think!!) and as the name had to match the passport, it cost me �36 to change the name, so a return flight to Carcassonne of �84 for four passengers, became �120. Zero tolerance on ANY alterations or mistakes, and they cost you! You also need to have alternate dates and flying times (if possible) to find the best prices.
But if you are careful, they are worth using.

I've flown with the big boys (including such well-respected airlines as Qantas) but Ryanair remains my number one favourite airline. I was browsing their website last night, looking for some bargain day trips to treat myself just before Christmas. I had no problem finding return flights to places like Gerona and Valencia for �23.77 and �24.65 respectively. Those fares include taxes and charges. Yes, I know that I'll pay a few pounds extra for credit card processing and to skip the check-in queues (by using the online facility) but that still means that the return fares will be around �30 in total. Personally, I couldn't care less if the aircraft has no seats, one wing and an outside toilet. As long as it's cheap, I'm happy ;-)

I've flown all over Europe with Ryanair. I've never paid more than �50 for return travel, including all of the 'little extras' that Ryanair add on. Long may they prosper!

Buenchico, you are the angel's voices to budget airlines and probably the big boys as well: this is precisely what they want to hear. The passenger really doesn't care how dangerous it is, how tedious it is, how victimised they are by pressure-selling and particularly how lackadaisical they are about safety. Who knows, perhaps you've just inspired to Declan Ryan consider contracting with the Jehovah Witnesses to come on board and sell magazines (and salvation) during your flight to the Balearic Islands!

I felw ryanair a number of years ago, and like the Vicar, wouldn't again

The toilets were full to over flowing point and by full I mean with sewage! And the crew weren't bothered!

"A number of years ago" was before they bought all new aircraft. They've improved a lot and with modern up-to date aircraft (Boeing 737-800) they fly better aircraft than a lot of so-called major airlines on their short-haul routes.

Went with them 3 years ago, dirtiest plane I ever flew on, wasn't particularly cheap, but happened to be the only airline that flew to the place I needed to go to.
