How far ?

Whilst relaxing on the beach at Roker yeserday , i espyed two ships on the horizon and wondered how far away they were ?
How far IS the horizon ?
not a crossword , i'm afraid , just something i must know or i will never sleep again !

hi beerbelly - cor what a disappointment i i always thought we could see approx 28 miles, but guess what, it's nothing like that, have a look on this site and you will be surprised, if not a little dissapointed, hava a look then get a good night's kip
