I've answered the query myself, it is ELEVE, French for pupil.

But one I can't seem to get is:

Ten down and all out (6)
I have S?R?G?

The only thing that fits is SHRUGS, or SPRIGS but why?

I think it's STRIKE. Ten pin bowling / workers going on strike = 'all out'
