Pyrenean mountain dog and little boy (and the band is indeed named after them). As to which version you watched I know that a cartoon by Toshiyuki Kashikuran was made but I can't remember the year. In addition there was either a dubbed or subtitled black and white version in from 1967. It can be found here http://www.memorabletv.com/episodeguides/belleandsebastian.h tm
You'll be asking about the flashing blade or White Horses next.
You can get the series on DVD: http://www.play.com/play247.asp?source=675&page=title&Cur=25 7&r=R2&title=112233 (I think there was only one season, so that's your lot). Theme tune, pictures and info here: http://www.thechestnut.com/belle.htm
