You're not supposed to scour cast iron pans. The carbon fills the pores and acts a non-stick surface. Washing in soap and water is sufficient.
Brazilians are almost fanatical about protecting their cast iron pots and pans and clean them with a drop of oil and newspapers, simply rubbing out the pan or pot until it shines. I guess, if we go back to our days of eating fish & chips in newspaper, there's really little difference.

In the southern part of the united states, the typical fry-pan is cast iron as well. I used to watch with fascination as cooks in the local 'Waffle House' would just wipe out the pans from time to time with a tea towel... so it would seem to be setting a trend...

and...by the way...I hope you're cooking for us all! :-)

How can two people both miss the word Stand. I was hoping for an answer as I have the same problem.
try fairy power spray, it gets rid of almost everything. and as it's a pan stand you're wanting to clean, and not a pan, then i shouldn't think it will harm it.
Apologies...so much for my exhaustion! My secret to that is to toss it into the bath with a laundry tablet. I do that with the hob irons as well. When I return at the end of the day, they're immaculate!

Nice comment about the Fairy spray. I've not been very lucky with the stuff. Instead, I continue to use Borax powder, which seems to do a bit better ...at least for the messes I make :-)

tried fairy spray doesnt seem to get rid of the stains.........
these stands are a ****** to clean shud have stuck to the normal enamel ones!
if you've tried everything then the only solution i can think of is 'bin it' and buy another one. what a shame.

what bin the cooker??? ive only had it 3 weeks!!! the pan stands are the ones that sit on top of the cooker..... the cooker is useless without them. I think you may have mistaken what I meant by pan stand.
oh crikey, i have completely misunderstood what you meant. i thought you meant a stand to put a hot pan on to prevent marks on the worktop - sorry!!
i don't think there's anything at all you can do about the cooker ones you mean, that's just the way they go when they're used. now, what you really need is a halogen hob like mine - a quick wipe over with a damp cloth and hey presto comes up all shiney and new.
sorry for the confusion.
Oops! sorry shabz. Danged if I didn't miss the word "stand". I was tired.
Pop em in the tub overnight, with a biological washing powder. They'll be sorted by the morning.

Best of luck
