Hello,

I've just taken an old Victorian fireplace out of one room and am about to install it in another. It had abot 7 coats of thick paint covering it which I have stripped - very slowly! I've now got the exposed metal which I rather like and would like to keep. However, it keeps developing rust spots from moisture in the air.

Is there anything I can use to seal the metal without colouring it? It also needs to be used as a working fire so any covering would need to be completely heat proof!

A tall order perhaps?! Suggestions appreciated!

I've got a cast iron fireplace, which has been polished in places. The recommended treatment given was to give it a rub over with WD40 on a lint free soft cloth about once a month. Works a treat and my fire is in use as well.

Only Caveat is to make sure is that the hearth is covered up with something to make sure you don't drop any WD40 on it. Mines Marble and the first time I cleaned it, it took longer to clean the Marble than the fireplace :(
