when is it a good time to let your dog/puppy have a bine? i mean like to bone from a leg of lamb? my puppy is 6 months old and i would like to let him have it. any suggestions anyone?
This is something I have spoken to my vet about. This is roughly what he told me:
It is not thought suitable nowadays to give dogs bones unless they are the special ones you can get from animal feed places, which are very, very hard. Bones of any type can splinter very easily and can cause problems. Large bones like you describe or not so bad, but still suspect.
My friend's dog recently had a very bad infection arising from a splinter of bone scratching his intestines.
as a general rule, don't offer your pup any bone that is shorter than the width of its mouth, and like fakeplastic said, make sure its a very hard one that won't splinter easily.
I never give my dogs bones. They can splinter, especially chicken bones which should NEVER be given! They cause diarrhea and your dog can get very possessive over bones!
