It may be that someone has calculated the amount of revenue generated by repeat fees and syndication of JR's radio and TV shows worldwide, and that is the amount - and hey presto - that's what he is being paid!
In fact he may, and probably is, paid considerably less than this.
For the record, I think he is required listening and viewing, but I know a lot of people can't abide him.

Johathon Ross is a brilliantly witty & handsome man, at least he thinks he is. I do find him rather annoying but I am addicted to his Friday night show - which I thought was recorded the previous day, but on watching Something For The Weekend on Sunday morning, Aled Jones & Cerys Mathews said they'd been recording on the JR show the previous day, so it must be recorded on Saturdays. Very interesting I know.....
Also, his false laugh is so excruciatingly painful to listen to.

Probably one of the most naturally witty people on TV. His radio show is still very funny and required listening and it benefits from having lesser celebrity guests on that he actually talks to. His banter / flirting with the ordinary joes who phone in for the competition (when that was still allowed) is one of the funniest & most entertaining parts.
In contrast his TV show is self indulgent to the nth degree and the ironic joke oft repeated, that he really is the saviour of the BBC, is wearing very thin. I have no wish to see his unattractive dog dressed up or him fawning to A list stars.
Unfortunately the BBC has a history of doing this ....finding a talent and then deciding that he / she is the only person that the public wants and therefore saturates us to the point of exhaustion. I will continue to listen to the radio show but I happily miss his chat show.
