start-up problem

when turning on my PC, about 60% of the time the screen stays black and the BIOS beep does not sound. This always happens if the computer has been turned off at the mains or PSU has been manually turned off.

When the PC is turned on, i keep having to hold the power button to turn it off...and eventually the startup screen loads, but says the processor is 1250MHz, not 2000MHz like it should. When this happens i have to enter the BIOS and exit again...when it restarts it usually then says 2000MHz and boots fine.

I have changed the CMOS battery, so im not sure whether its a PSU or motherboard problem.

Any ideas?

If you don't get a beep then your PC isn't completing its POST (Power On Self Test) properly. That's a bad sign.

The BIOS contains information that tells the computer what type of hardware it has and this information is held in a memory chip. The battery is used to provide power to that BIOS chip when the PC is switched off.

If you've changed the battery then you've lost the BIOS info so you'll have to enter and save it again.

Check you've got the correct type of battery. Check your motherboard manual for details of how to set up the BIOS parameters.

sorry. what i mean is....it wasnt working, so then i changed the CMOS battery and the problem still persists.

The settings say "safe mode" when it comes up as 1250MHz and will not boot into windows....but without manually changing any settings...and literally just going into the bios and then "saving changes and restarting" (even though no changes have been made) - it boots fine and displays 2000MHz.
