Give it time, I'm sure it will turn up. I am a member of ebay, and sell my unwanted items worldwide, I have posted stuff all over the UK, and overseas including the USA, Spain, France, Australia, Hawaii, Germany and Poland, and I have NEVER had a parcel go missing. Personally, I don't think you can beat Royal Mail.
Being a postman I'd have to say that the amount of work we have had during the strike period has been phenomenal. It's like working back in the days when it was a monopoly. I would like to say more but I'm sworn to the 'secrets act' and what not.
Getting back to the subject, although ParcelForce are a separate branch of the Royal Mail network, the majority of the work will always come down to the Royal Mail employees (i.e postmen & postwomen) who deliver it to your door. Unless it's a big parcel then ParcelForce will usually deliver it themselves.
So even if people use other delivery companies, they will still have to go through Royal Mail (for that lovely 13p's worth of service) for it to be delivered to your door.

Oh and as for the tracking number - It's alright, sometimes it will work. It may take a few days to get going (like 6 days for it to work on a parcel of mine) and sometimes the actual tracking slip and barcode will come off into an RSC.
They need to stick these things on with heavy duty glue or something.
Otherwise you might want to check the website and see where your parcel may have ended up.
