Leeds is ace and I won't hear another word against it! To be honest though, the phrase 'grim up north' is well known for a reason. I think the weather is much the same as anywhere but when we get sunny days it is a wonderful place to be. Less crowded and stressful than London but still v cosmopolitan (loads of great bars too!). Bring a brolly and you'll be fine - its not freezing or anything - in fact these past few weeks its been boiling (but still raining!)
Leeds is one of the smartest and most up-and-coming Northern cities, with its share of haves and have-nots just like anywhere else. I live in in North Yorkshire and we have had 25 degrees today and decent weather for a couple of weeks or so. Try not to be freaked out by travelling "further north than Leicester" - it's not a different country y'know! I would bring layers, just like my mum would say. Best plan would probably be to watch the weather forecast. But there are numerous things to do, indoors and out.
