Over-rated? Compared with what, pray?
If you were around when they appeared you'd know how dreadfully dreary 'popular' music was. Then in 1962 came this guitar band with cheery ditties, 'Love me Do' etc, by 1966 ther was Revolver with a whole range of music unlike any other 'pop group' - Polical comment, taxman, a cheery kids song, 'Yellow Submarine', eastern weirdness 'Tomorrow Never Knows', 67 had masterpieces like 'Penny Lane' and 'Strawberry Fields for Ever'
They influenced every other musician, and showed what was possible. Its not obvious now, looking back through 40 years of music to just how important they were.
My Dad said of them 'There music willl never last, not like the classics'. How I'd like him to be here everytime I'm in a lift thats playing a Beatles tune, or hear a singer take one and re-interpret it.
You may not like them, thats your right, but rubbish they were not.
The Beatles come from a long line of bands who served their apprenticeship and grew up the hard way. They actually played their instruments and wrote their own songs, they slogged round the small halls and pubs for years before actually making the big time - same as the Stones, The Who, The Faces and many, many more. Manufactured they weren't''.they got a lucky break maybe, but even so, that still applies today.
They were a mark of their time, as Andy observes ' same as Glenn Miller & Bill Haley before them.
The current climate is full of 'pop-idols' and 'fame academy' types that won't last, but there are still plenty of talented performers that will stay the course - Robbie Williams springs to mind (not a personal choice, but a fine example of staying power, even from a manufactured band).
Music is a highly personal thing and thankfully there is a diversity out there enough to satisfy everyone. Just enjoy what you like, give new stuff a try, keep an open mind'.it really isn't necessary to denigrate artists that are not to your taste ' live and let live guys'!
Sorry for the complicated words, but apparently the simple ones (like sl*g off) are profanities and not allowed'!!) ' ;o)
