Where else in the USA.........

Can anyone suggest somewhere to go one holiday in the States.
I've been to New York and Las Vegas and was looking for somewhere else to visit.
I like sightseeing, shopping and eating.
I would like some nice weather too, so if you suggest somewhere, whens the best time of year to go.

San Francisco has great shops & all the big department stores - Macey's, Saks, Nordstroms etc are on Union Square and surrounding streets have the smaller shops like, Banana Republic, Bebe, Arden B, BCBG etc etc. I work in the fashion trade & love shopping in SF. Union square area is also the Theatre district. There are loads of websites - if you google SF - with info on the city, day trips, hotels, restaurants etc. Have a look and when you find something that interests you come back with more specific questions & we'll help if we can. You can usually trust Rough Guide & Lonely Planet also.

Bigmamma: Good evening! Yes, indeed it was. She's a lovely lady. It's tragic how her MS has destroyed her. It has progressed so much now that I'm afraid she won't be with us much longer. The MS has creeped into her speech and now her breathing is becoming laboured. Her entire life has been wrapped in sorrow. It was an honour for me to take her on this magic trip to the states. And I'm so thankful to all my friends who helped make it so special.

It's past bedtime for me! Early start on Tuesdays.

At the moment it's $2 to �1, the best exchange rate for 25 years or so, so a good time to go is right now. Have you thought of New York over Christmas? Magical and well worth seeing even if you've already been there at a different time of year.

California, much superior to Florida [ sorry folks, I do like Florida though], start with a few days in San Francisco a lovely city, lots to do, hotel on Fishermans Wharf is ideal, then rent a car and go to Monteray [ I could have stayed there forever], Carmel, Big Sur, there is a lovely national park on the way down, close to the coast, drive.all the way down that coast,very relaxing, lots of lovely restaurants, motels etc.

I thought your post had the South covered pretty well - but I put in a link to Atlanta for you and added the Charleston link in case they wanted to try "low country" cooking as well.

I added the other places, because I have noticed that when most people on AB mention coming to the USA they are usually visiting the more expensive parts of the country and you can do so much more for the same amount of money in a TON of other places. You could probably explain that much better than I can, so please do - the people deserve to know that the whole country isn't as expensive as New York and Orlando!!!

Your descriptions are so good they will all want to come to the South now!!! Thank you for that!!!

Ahhh BBW I see you know all the finest gastronomically challenging places of your country! Indeed! My goodness, it�s one of my favourite places to take tourists. I love telling them the story of the owner Frank Gordy being kicked out of school being told by the Headteacher that he�d never be anything but a hot dog salesman! Lovely story.

Yes, indeed, I think I probably do need to write a bit about the South. It�s so unfortunate that my fellow Brits actually have no idea about it whatsoever. I�ll never give it the justice it deserves, but I�m delighted you made the point about value for money. Indeed, there is better value for money between Jacksonville and Knoxville than anywhere else in America. And if I do say so myself, you are truly blessed to live in such a magnificent part of the states.

I�m quite often a bit north of you as well, Roanoke � The Homestead at Hot Springs � The Greenbrier at White Sulphur Springs and Colonial Williamsburg. South of you I am at The Cloister at Sea Island, the Ritz Carlton at Amelia Island and a few points in-between. Absolutely beautiful. And again, truly the finest in America. There�s just nothing to compare, even in this country!

What I�ve found to be so fascinating is that the people I take are not in any way shape or form the types who would ever remotely consider someone suggesting they go to a �drive in.� But when they do, it�s as if they�ve had a whole new world opened to them! Amazing!
