Testing Oven Temperature

I live in rented accommodation and the oven I have is part of the F&F.

It is a gas oven with the burner underneath the bottom of the oven not at the back. The temperature settings don't seem to be right. When I try to bake stuff seems to take longer than it should to cook but burns underneath.

I remember a recipe book of my mums which gave a method for testing the oven settings by placing somthing in it and timing it so you could work out how much the temperature varied from the settings and adjust recipe cooking times accordingley.

Anyone any ideas.

Thanks

An oven thermometer?
I know its something to do with a pyrex jug and a pint of water and timing how long it takes to boil. What I don't know is the temperature you set the oven to but I know at "whatever" temperature it is set to then the water should boil. Someone will know the temperature I hope!
