Why is the name William abbreviated to Wm and not just W? What is so special about that name that it needs a two letter abbreviation? You see it on business vans, letterheads etc. For example Wm. Smith & Sons.

Don't know the real reason but I could hazard a guess. The Wm abreviation is quite old and so it could have been used to distinguish between William and Walter or other names begining with W.

Henry Hy, and Charles Chas. Would one say that W for William is not an abbreviation but an initial, and that Wm is an abbreviation?
