I am trying to connect to a colleague's computer over broadband. Both of us are connected to NTL Broadband - but because of different locations, both of us have different IP connecting numbers. Does any one know if this can be done - and if yes, how? We are both using Apple MAC - but since we both have IP address, the coputer make shoudl not matter. Thanks

Some adsl and cable modems/routers have built in firewalls which prevent some incoming connections. If this is the case, there should be a way to configure which connections to allow. Some use a config executable on the computer, others use a http interface where you type in the modem/router ip address in your web browser. Also, port forwarding may be required. If you are not using software that uses IP to directly connect, virtual private lans become an issue. Best to start off with the technical manual for your modem or contact ntl for info. Hope this helps a bit.
All the above is true. However, I regularly connect to various users on Telwest Broadband in another part of country for remote support. I am also on Telewest Broadband. All of us use a software firewall, and I have found no blocking on the cable modems. Routers are a different bag as has been said. NTLs Broadband product is very similar so you should have no or few problems at all. I am not very familiar with Macs - what exactly is it that you want to connect for ? Is it a particular application ? For an inital test try to 'ping' the remote IP address (if MACs have that ability ??) - format is ping x.x.x.x
