Barfing cat

I had to take Frankie to the vet last night as he had been 'off colour' for a few days and had been sick all over the place.

I assumed that Merlin (his loving sister) had beat him up again and that there was an infection.

The vet (who looked about 16) said that his temperature was on 'the high side of normal' and he palpated his tummy and found nothing untoward. He also said that it was unlikely that there was an infected wound as he had checked for any signs of wounds.

He mentioned the nasty phrase 'foreign object'. I had assumed that cats were to intelligent to eat something inedible. I know dogs do it, but Frankie eats slowly and delicately.

Anyway - he has antibiotics called Betamox (just to cover the possibility of a tummy bug) and is still eating and drinking. He has kept his breakfast down for nearly 40 minutes!

Has anybody got a cat that had a foreign object in its tummy? I am hoping that it won't be the cause of him miserable little condition.

Whilst he is ill his sister has taken over as top cat and is swaggering around like she owned the joint. Frankie is just glaring at her, noting her crimes, and will get back to her later.

I worry about them so very much when they are ill - all logic goes and I go into panic mode.

Reassure me, please, that I am just an anxious mother.

I had a similar scenario with one of my girls a few months back, and was particularly worried about a foreign object as she is a chewer, and it wouldnt have surprised me if she had half a sock in her gut. However, she was put on antibiotics and after 24 hours was more or less back to normal, so try not to worry too much at the moment, I know if you are anything like me you will be watching him like a hawk!

Did the vet mention scanning him or using an endoscope if he doesnt show any signs of improvement? If he is still being sick tonight, I would be inclined to go back and see a different vet and ask them how long he needs to be on antibiotics before they do any further investigation.

Thanks for that. It is always easy to be rational and give advice - when it isn't your own animal!

He does seem brighter and has been wandering around. I found some very dried up puke - but unless it dries out in 4 hours it was old puke. I haven't heard the dreadful churning noise of him bringing it up.

The little b**tard is sitting on the window sill watching the world go by.

The vet told me to give it a couple of days unless he gets worse and only mentioned the x-ray. The vets practice is really good and I trust the vet - but he was SO young that he hasn't got the experience that the others have.

I am off to watch him - his sister is eyeing him up trying to decided whether he is top cat again or whether she is still the boss. They are amusing.

hi wolf hope puss is still keeping it all down i expect hes eaten something that does not agree with him we are all over the top about our own animals hopefully by this evening he will be better and so will you

Hi wolf63 If you feel unhappy with the vet and Frankie is no better, see another vet, you are paying and its your choice.Anyway look on the bright side he may well be alot better tomorrow.I know how you feel when one of our pals are unwell they just cannot tell us how they are feeling and it makes us feel helpless. Good luck to Frankie, tomorrow might be a better day for him. g

one of mine was fighting with a stray in the summer, cost me a fortune as he had two pussy wounds!! on medication for 10days during july!!!! i was vile, pussy paw and a growling cat covered in manure

Thanks - i think that he is feeling better. I haven't found a little pile of puke lately and haven't heard the awful "I'm going to be sick" noises.

I think that cats were sent to drive humans insane.

I am sorry to hear that Frankie is unwell...maybe this is Nature's way of giving Merlin a chance to be top dog...oooopps-erm-cat ...for a while. Sloppy hugs from Cleo xx

Hi Wolf,
I hope Frankie is getting better by the minute - I know EXACTLY what you mean about being irrational when it is your own pet !
I don't know how many times I have had major panic over my cat Fang because he is - off his food/eating loads/not wanting to go out/wanting to go out all the time/major grumpy mood/major affectionate mood...in fact anything slightly out of the norm.Yet I can be so level headed when it comes to friends pets!
I'm sure Fang is egging Frankie to milk it as much as possible but his mum Spikey hopes that Frankie is soon back to normal xxxxxx
