A while ago I read in the papers that a trial was taking place in which lorries were not being allowed to use the outside lane of a two-lane motorway, or the third lane of a three-lane one. I can't remember where the experiment was taking place or when.
Does anyone know what happened next?

Thanks. LG

Hi, It has been the law for many years that lorries and coaches are not allowed to use the outside lane on a three lane motorway. This only applies to lorries over 7 1/2 tons laden. They can use the outside lane on a two lane motorway and all lanes on dual carriageways ( ie,three lane dual carriageways ). I do not know of any pending legislation banning them from the outside lane on two lane motorways.

Do you mean the 12 month trial banning LGVs etc. from overtaking (i.e. restricted to inside lane only) on selected sections of the A14?

Thank you both for your answers.
I think the A14 trial ban is the item I was thinking of.
Looking at the date of the story, it is obviously ongoing. I'll
await the outcome with interest.
Thanks again.
There is also the ongoing no overtaking trial on the M42 in the 2 lane section between 9 and 10.
Speaking from experience of continental motorways (which in the main are 2 lane) its a right pain to a truck driver when you get to a no overtaking ban. In Germany, some sections are 15 miles long and it is really frustrating getting stuck behind some knackered Liaz or similar. You soon learnt the junctions where you could get off the motorway and back on in front of the 'blocking' truck!
A couple of years ago Caravans were restricted to the inside lane on part of the M5 during the holiday season. I don't know if they continued this afterwards.
