Squirrel Hell!

I have recently moved into a house with a family of squirrels residing in the garden. Herein lies my problem - I have tried to plant various bulbs in tubs, hanging baskets and borders. Only to find when I go out the next day that the squirrels have dug out & eaten the bulbs. Not only is this bloody annoying, it's proving to be rather expensive. Any ideas on how to prevent this from happening? Would putting a nut feeder up distract them from the bulbs? Any ideas appreciated!

Just a guess because I'm not a gardener, but could you either cover your bulbs' soil with fine netting to allow growth and rainfall, but discourage the squirrels, or if not, what about spraying the area with commercial cat/dog repellent which may deter them. It's an idea, maybe someone with direct experience can advise further.
