Hi , I have just discovered my 6 year old Packard Bell has a two-toned alarm system ( similar to a police car ) as the blooming thing activated and scared the wits out of me. Now on advice from PC World it has been cleaned ( very dusty inside ) as it may have over-heated, and it has not happened since. Now has anyone else ever come across this ? Is this the end for my dear old trusty?

Overheating is a fairly common problem with laptops, especially if you take the name literally and use them on your lap - or any other non-rigid surface. The purpose of the alarm is to warn you of the problem before any real damage occurs, so I would say No, it's not the end. Just make sure you keep the vents clear of blockages and that the fans are working and everything should be fine.
