Blonde hair, blue eyes- status symbol?

Whilst reading an article regarding the search for Madeleine McCann, I have been wondering about about something that was said in this article. It said that a blonde haired, blue eyed, fair skinned child was a status symbol in Morocco. Can anyone tell me if this is true , and if so, why? Would children like this be chereished, or are there more sinister motives?
I remember a boss of mine going on holiday to Morocco years ago. He had a toddler with blonde hair , and he said the locals were fascinated by her . He was even offered money for her. Why?

We were recently in Shanghai & Hong Kong with our 14 month old Blond haired blue eyed son and it was like walking along with a Holywood star. People were taking photos, running out of restaraunts to stroke his hair etc.
Whole families were taking photos of him in a group.
It was unreal. One woman on the plane spent pretty much the whole journey leant forward in her seat looking at him.

Well Feist - I AM young, I AM blonde (naturally so), I'm quite tall and slim - and even if you find this boring in your estimation - I'd rather be me than you.

I dont see why people in places like Morrocco, Egypt, greece etc etc would be in awe of blonde hair and blue eyes when millions of european tourists visit their country each year.

Very true that in the far east they are fascinated by blondness. Tall, blonde people are photographed all the time and people do stop and stare.

On holiday in Majorca a few years ago my son was the centre of attention in a shop because he was blond. 'Rubio' they called him - obviously Spanish for blond, which I thought was quite endearing. He was wearing his Real Majorca football top which had his name (Joe) on the back and the ladies couldn't pronouce it properly calling him 'ho' so I think I preferred Rubio...

My parents took Teen Boo to Turkey when she was about 6 or 7 for a holiday, all went well till they visited a local market. She's blue-eyed and REALLY blonde, almost platinum and the locals were agog and were running off their stalls to stroke her hair, she was literally mobbed and was terrified.
