see those big metal circles by the side of the road with numbers in them? them numbers inside are the speed limits. They put them up all over the place, especially in 'unfamiliar areas', just so that you can know the limit.
Doesn't that suggest to you that it is the standard of driving which is at fault, rather than the imposition of an arbitrary number?
There are roads around here which are perfectly safe to drive at 40mph+ for perhaps 22 hours in the day. Imposing a 30mph limit for all 24 hours is simply pandering to the fact that it's easier to make money from people driving appropriately for the conditions than it is to bother catching those that are actually unsafe.
Show me a camera that can stop a drunk driver, that can recover my stolen car, that can impound an unroadworthy vehicle and I would support them 100%. Until then I would prefer that we scrapped the lot of them and brought back traffic police that can use judgement and common sense.
Nice post, but it just doesn' t fit the facts.
Most accidents are caused by speeding.
Accidents happen at all hours, many by drinking (drunk pedestrian walks on to road, gets hit). You can't stop in time if you're speeding.
Most speeders think they are driving appropriately or that they are 'more skilled than other drivers'. OF COURSE IT'S SAFE. 9 times out of 10. Problem is, on the 10th occasion, some child will run out on to the road, or the road will be slippier than you thought, or some idiot backs out of a blind corner. Then you end up in a wheelchair for the rest of your life, reflecting on your great theory.
Speed cameras are not there for profit, the vast majority of the profits go towards improving road traffic safety. And cameras DO make people obey the speedlimits. If everyone obeys the speedlimit, we all get there faster. It's the speeders wanting to weave their way about, then causing sharp braking and traffic 'ripples' that cause the jams.
And all this for what? So that you can 'shave 10 minutes of your journey'. And sit at home or in the office an extra 10 minutes, all at the expense of risking everyone else's lives?
90% percent of accidents are not caused by speeding they are caused by old people doing stupid things in there clapped out asthmatic heaps of metal on wheels and obstructions in the road like badly lit skips or mechanical failiure. And people constantly looking at there speedo through fear of coming across a camera. Only 10% are caused by speeding and two thirds of this 10% there is another primary factor before the speeding which is a poorly maintained car
An accident involved a car and a concrete bridge support pillar on an A road.
The man was 3 times over the legal limit to drive. He was driving 20mph over the national speed limit, it was raining and his car had no MOT certificate and 3 bald tyres.
What caused the accident?
The speed?
The fact he was drunk?
Or the unroadworthy car?
These are official government findings when ghatso cameras where investigated last to see if they are effective.
Research before you get on your soap box.
