Hi all, I have recently sold an item through amazon. I sent the parcel first class and it never arrived. I put a claim in for the full amount , complete with proof of postage. This will enable me to fully reimberse the buyer. The post office in its wisdom will only compensate me for the value of the item and the actual postage paid. The postage value is set by amazon which although higher than the actual postage cost the extra covers the packaging (jiffy bag) and some of the amazon fees. At the moment the item has cost my buyer �6.20 they have offerred �5.29. I know you will all say tight git it is only a small amount of money but there is a principle here after all if you recieved a letter without a stamp they would charge you for it plus an admin fee!!!! The point is through their negligence in losing my parcel I will be out of pocket. If they lost ten of my parcels I would be nearly �10 out of pocket. I wrote in to complain atb thier offer and was told they are not legally obliged to pay the differance. Surely I can't be the only person this has happend to?
I don't think it unreasonable for a customer to expect to be compensated for the full amount of the loss not what they feel they would like to pay.
Is there anything I can do further to recover my financial loss that is all their fault?

Where would it stop? The petrol and parking charges when you went to post the parcel?

The post office have no proof how you wrapped this parcel or the value of the packaging. The Amazon fees are not their concern.

When you use the post office you agree to abide to their terms and conditions which state compensation of the value of the item up to ten times the cost of a first class stamp for normal first or second class post.

Offset your loss against your income tax, like all other business sellers.

for the record I paid �1.85 for first class postage. So am well within their limits.
I'm not bothered about petrol etc. I don't see why it is so unreasonable to be paid for the the finacial loss as evidenced by the 'Amazon sales' statement I gave the post office.

We're talking about 91p here aren't we? Ok, technically you have lost money, but it's 91p for goodness sake! You'll probably spend more than 91p in time and money trying to recoup the loss.
A small amount but I can see the point. Most large utilities (including Royal Mail I suspect) would charge you an admin fee on top of the actual loss. I know BT charge �85 call out to sort out a problem if its not their fault. Fair enough - they have got to pay their staff but whenever I spend a day on the phone sorting out a problem with a large utility or for example a bank, or take a day off and noone shows up I always claim �10 an hour for my time. BT will only pay a standard �10 compensation for no show but I claimed a day's wages and they paid up. If you are not greedy you can get away with it.
If you only used first class and not special delivery why would you think you should get compensation for the full amount? RM have offered you what they will, so take it and let this be a lesson learned - use special delivery or recorded if you want a full money back offer.

�1.85 first class postage does not inc insurance but for another 70p you would have been insured for up to �34 - more than anough to cover your losses
